Black Lives Matter Part 2: Supporting Slavery Education Travel

“Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating  that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.”- Maya Angelou

When you plan your future trips, why not include learning about the black history in that location? Almost everywhere you go, there have been pivotal black history events that you can learn about. There are dozens of cultural attractions in Detroit Michigan, Louisiana, Alabama, Virginia, South Carolina, and almost every other U.S. State.

Alabama

Walk across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama and feel the experience of 25 year old future congressman John Lewis had in 1965. I am stunned to discover that this bridge was named for the head of the Alabama Ku Klux Klan!

In 1965, 50% of the population there was black but only 2% were registered voters. The four day march from Selma to Montgomery led to the Voting Rights Act of 1965. While these attractions may not as provide as much excitement as the Las Vegas strip, it is important in order to open up your horizons and expand your perspectives.

Louisiana

Slave Cabin At The Whitney Plantation.

If you want to see slave life on plantations, Louisiana is a good place to target many sights on the same trip. Most slaves worked sunup to sundown. Life was hard. You will find the majority of the plantations had slaves work the sugar cane fields, Tobacco, indigo plants for dye, and cotton.

There are a bunch worth visiting between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. St. Joseph Plantation, Whitney Plantation, Laura Plantation and Evergreen Plantation all tell different stories of plantation life so you will get a well rounded view. Evergreen even has 22 slave cabins on the property.

Slave Accommodations.

You will either have a guided tour or a self-guided tour. There are tour companies based out of New Orleans and Baton Rouge that will do all the driving for you and take you to multiple plantations in one day. That is probably the most efficient way to do this type of trip.

Chicago

To learn about slavery and African-American injustice, you need to visit several cultural highlights and landmarks in the city of Chicago. One of the most important historical sites in Chicago is the Pullman Historic District. Pullman is a historic, industrial town that was originally founded in May 1880. Its founder, George M. Pullman originally planned the town to create a model community for working-class citizens. Within the district today, there are several sites, memorials, and monuments commemorating the town’s history. When you visit, be sure to check out the Pullman factory and Hotel Florence. At the same time, you need to stop by the A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum, which is dedicated to teaching the history of African-American labor in the United States.

South Carolina

Old Slave Mart Museum in Charleston, South Carolina.

As you plan a historical trip to educate you about African-American history, you need to pay a visit to South Carolina. Visiting South Carolina, you need to visit the Old Slave Mart Museum in Charleston. At one point in time, Charleston was the point where roughly 35% to 40% of African slaves entered the United States. Many of the employees who work at the Old Slave Mart Museum, are able to trace their family lineage directly back to Charleston slaves. When you visit, be prepared to spend at least half a day soaking in the different images, artifacts, posters, and excerpts that fill the museum. Also stop by the Avery Research Center in Charleston to learn all about southern slavery. The McLeod Plantation will show you how slaves lived through the generations. Coming in 2022 is the International African-American Museum at Gadsdens Wharf. This was the landing spot for over 100,000 Africans who were then sold into slavery. If you are in Charleston on a Friday, celebrate Black Food Fridays where Black-owned restaurants are highly suggested to support.

Virginia

In order to further educate yourself about African-American history and culture, you need to visit historical attractions in Virginia. In Virginia, not far from Norfolk and Virginia Beach, head to the Hampton University Museum. Enter the African-American fine arts galleries and you are in for a treat. Here you will encounter something unique. You will see the history of Black America through art. Africans brought distinctive artistic traditions and skill to this country. In this museum are excellent examples of paintings by some of the early 20th century artists. They were true pioneers in their struggles to overcome discrimination in their profession, in opening doors for the generation which followed them.

One of the most important attractions you can visit is the Freedom House in Alexandria, VA. The Freedom House was built in 1812, and served as a residence for Brigade General Robert Young. After 16 years of ownership, the property was leased to the slave dealing firm Franklin and Armfield. Under their ownership, the Freedom House became a slave pen, holding enslaved men, women, and children that were traveling to plantations. In the modern era, the Freedom House serves as a museum sharing exhibits, perspectives, interpretations, and other unique artifacts.

Florida

Kingsley Plantation in Jacksonville, Florida.

To learn more about slavery and African-American history, there are additional historic sites to visit in Florida. Visiting Jacksonville, Florida, one of the most important attractions you can see is the Kingsley Plantation. The plantation is named after its former owner, Zephaniah Kingsley, who lived there for 25 years. Visiting Kingsley Plantation, you are able to tour the full property, including the 23 slave cabins, barn, waterfront, kitchen house, interpretive garden, and plantation house from 1798. It is approximately 39 miles from Jacksonville. In addition to the Kingsley Plantation, there are several additional sites commemorating African-American history in Florida. Other sites in Jacksonville include the Bethel Baptist Institutional Church and the American Beach Historic District. Bethel Baptist was church of choice for many slaves who worked nearby on the plantations. Of course they needed to get permission to attend from their master. American Beach was one of the few resort/beach areas in the U.S. for African-Americans. When your visit, be sure to check out the Howard Thurman House and Mary McLeod Bethune Home in Daytona Beach. Howard Thurman was one of the original thinkers of the Civil Rights Movement and was an influence on Dr. King. They offer tours there on Friday and Saturday every week. While your in town, you can additionally pay a visit to Kennedy Space Center and Florida Space Coast.

Washington D.C.

How about a museum focused on black history and civil rights? The National Museum of African-American History and Culture in Washington DC is the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African-American life, history, and culture. The Museum opened up in 2016 as the 19th and newest museum of the Smithsonian Institution.

Tennessee

The fantastic National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis takes you at the end through the attached Lorraine Motel room balcony where Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. Very powerful museum. You will need many hours to go through the permanent exhibits. They cover Slavery, Student Sit-Ins, the Montgomery Bus Boycott,  Freedom Rides and Black Power. If you are planning a trip, read our complete post-COVID travel guide to help eliminate some of your vacation stress.

Georgia

Speaking of Dr. King, head to Atlanta to see everything KIng. The Martin Luther King,Jr. National Historical Park consists of his boyhood home, his Ebenezer Baptist Church, monument, rose garden and his tomb. In the church’s sanctuary you can hear some of his sermons and speeches. Allow 2-3 hours.

The Herndon Home in Atlanta is also inspirational. Alonzo Herndon was born into slavery, eventually freed, opened up a string of barber shops, purchased failing insurance companies and ended up being one of the wealthiest black men in Georgia. See his incredible story.

The National Center for Civil and Human Rights Museum in Atlanta will blow you away. You learn about the history of the Civil Rights movement in the U.S. and around the world. Allow for two hours minimum.

Heading south three hours from Atlanta you arrive in Albany, Georgia. Plenty of pivotal Black History there. Start at the Ray Charles Memorial. It is located downtown and you will see a revolving, illuminated, bronze statue of Ray Charles seated at a baby grand piano. As water streams down the sides of the statue, his music plays in the park there. Georgia made his “Georgia On My Mind” the state anthem in 1979.

The statue is next to two walkways designed as keyboards with benches. The walkways connect to the Albany Riverwalk.

Ray Charles Robinson was born in 1930 in a section of Albany then known as “Flower City”. At age seven, he lost his eyesight to glaucoma. He was orphaned at age 15. Ray Charles persevered and went on to become one of the most successful performers of his time, applying his own style to blues, jazz and big band as a vocalist, pianist and saxophonist.

His success is reflected in his 12 Grammy Awards, Kennedy Center Honor and becoming one of the first inductees in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Albany Civil Rights Institute really tells a different story. Most civil rights memorials celebrate minor or major victories.

There was no triumph here. This is the city where Martin Luther King Jr. lost. But his failure in 1961 to integrate this city played a crucial role in the progress of the Civil Rights Movement. King learned from his mistakes and honed his non-violent protest strategies.

It’s also the city where the Civil Rights struggle literally found its voice. Next door you will find Mt. Zion Baptist Church. This is where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke to a crowd of thousands in 1961. The first mass meeting of the Albany Movement was held in Old Mt. Zion Church on 11/17/61. One month later he spoke to a crowd of 1,500 that overflowed the church, filling the streets and the Shiloh Baptist Church. After the meeting, he walked across the street to Shiloh Baptist Church and started Albany’s Famous Civil Rights March to the Trailways Bus Station.

That brings us to what became known as the Albany Movement. King was invited to town to help what was a broad protest against segregation. By December 1961, there were more than 700 protesters sitting in jail cells across the region. The conditions in the rural county jails were atrocious, making the ordeal harder on those arrested. From King’s perspective. he failed. But he did not fail. This attempt attracted the nation’s attention in the first mass movement in the modern civil rights era with the goal of desegregation of an entire community.

Mississippi

In Jackson, Mississippi you will find the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum as well. It shows the stories of the movement in the state that changed the country. You will see eight interactive galleries that lead you through history. $ 15 adult but free on the third Saturday of every month.

Arkansas

Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site in Arkansas is the only High School designated as a historic landmark. This is where nine Black High School students tried to go school for the first time in a white school with tremendous courage facing an angry mob of over 300 white people. The Governor ordered the military to stop them from entering the school  on Sept 4, 1957. After the federal government stepped in, after tremendous pressure, the “Little Rock Nine” went into the school unescorted and protected on Sept 25. Learn the stories there of these brave young students and their parents.

Kansas

The Brown vs. Board of Education National Historic Site in Topeka, Kansas commemorates the U.S. Supreme Court decision that ended racial segregation in public schools. Start in the auditorium where a 30 minute movie traces the history of racism and segregation.

There are other exhibits that walk you through the barriers Blacks faced while trying to receive a formal education from the early 19th century to the 1954 U.S. Supreme Court decision. You can see seven different short films and the Hall of Courage, which displays historic film footage.

While in the city, stop by the Great Wall Of Topeka murals. You will see incredible works of art depicting some of the black history of the city, including the landmark Brown vs Board of Education decision.

Missouri

Of course, you will need to pay a visit to Missouri in order to complete your slavery education travel journey. There are several major historical landmarks to visit in Missouri. In the city of St. Louis, you can visit the Shelley House, which commemorates the focus of one of the most famous equal protection cases in all of history. While you are still in the city, be sure to stop by the Old Courthouse, where many landmark Civil Rights cases were tried throughout history. If you still have some time on your trip, it is absolutely vital to head over to Independence, Missouri. Here, you can visit the Harry. S Truman Presidential Library & Museum, which reflects on many landmark events in the struggle for Civil Rights.

Other Major Museums & Historical Centers

Other major museums to explore the African-American experience are The Harvey Gantt Center in Charlotte and the Charles Wright Museum of African-American History in Detroit. Exhibits in both of those museums are always changing. Harvey Gaant was the first black student admitted into Clemson in 1963 (his wife was second) and he was Charlotte’s first black mayor.

The relatively new Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg, Canada will blow you away. It has seven floors and will take at least half a day to go through. It covers all types of global injustice that has taken place .

To educate yourself about the history of African-American racial inequality, injustice, and slavery in the United States, there are several historical sites to visit. Start your trip by visiting Selma, Alabama, home of many historical movements combating racial injustice and voting rights. Pay a visit to Louisiana where you can visit dozens of historical attractions, museums, and memorials. At the same time, you need to visit several historical sites in the city of Chicago. In addition, consider visiting historical sites in Virginia and South Carolina. Moreover, there are dozens of cultural attractions to visit in Florida. You can likely even find several historic sites to add to your New Mexico roadtrip travel itinerary. Consider the above sites and attractions to learn about how you can support Black Lives Matter through travel.

Part 1: Supporting The Black Lives Matter Movement Through Travel And Value Tourism

“History will not be kind to us. So you have a moral obligation, a mission and a mandate, to speak up, speak out and get in good trouble. You can do it. You must do it. Not just for yourselves but for generations yet unborn- John Lewis

This is the first post of an upcoming five part travel series supporting the Black Lives Matter movement…

During this time, I’m taking some time to reflect and think.

I am white, and some of us feel ashamed. White people are not perfect. White people have done some REALLY bad things to other people. Don’t even get me started on what we did to the Native Americans just for the pursuit of land and financial gain. In fact, you can check out our Native American tourism guide to learn more about that.

Even my grandmother did not realize she was being racist when she wore blackface impersonating Al Jolson when she was younger. She was one of millions who saw “The Jazz Singer” featuring one of the world’s best entertainer of his generation. Al Jolson was well known to wear blackface in his performances. The ironic thing about it is that he had a reputation for helping fight racial discrimination in his day.

My grandmother impersonating Al Jolson in a talent show.

Peaceful Protests Across The Globe

We have seen peaceful marches and protests around the world for the Black Lives Matter movement in virtually every city and many are wondering what they can do to support it?

Actual marches can be risky because of the loss of social distancing and people who go to work sometimes can’t find the time to join these groups. Here we try to address some ways to address that while you are starting to make travel plans again for next year. If you are stressing about travel plans and are apprehensive to travel or protest during COVID-19, there are several ways for you to still get involved. For example, share on social media, donate, sign petitions, and speak with your local representatives in government.

Learning Through Travel

Why not combine travel with learning this important history of our country? Going to beaches, amusement parks and wineries are all great and fun but these types of Black History trips will touch you in your core and possibly change you forever. Learning about oppressive history when you visit these sites is essential for travelers of all ages, even during your family vacations.

There are dozens of diverse museums, monuments, and cultural centers across the United States that allow you to learn about, reflect on, and connect with moments in Black History. Visiting these cultural attractions, you can better learn about the country’s horrific history of racial injustice.

As you go to new places, this movement may come up a lot in conversation as you meet more and more people. When Black people you meet want to engage in a conversation with you on the subject, the best thing you can do is NOT try to relate to their situation. If you are not Black, there is no way you can relate what they and their families feel and have gone through. Just be a good listener and learn about their experiences. Ask questions.

If you want to go back to the beginning of African-American history, it all starts with slavery. We have to admit that most white people had never heard of Juneteenth before June 2020.

Why?

We don’t recall it ever being taught in school or making it into our textbooks. Slavery ended on June 19, 1865 and it took until 2020 for most people to realize that was a really important moment in the country’s history. To this day, we cannot get all 50 states to recognize this important day. Did we know that the Civil War in part was about the South wanting to hold on to slavery? What do we know about the transition from Negro, to Colored, to Black, and then African-American? Here is something I came across as one definition. Black vs. African-American: African-American to describe people (groups/individuals). Black to describe an experience, culture. Black with a capital B. When is it appropriate now to use Black vs African- American?

Cultural Insights

Visiting these historic sites, you can obtain a cultural insight into the lives, past, history, and culture of African-American men, women, and children. Visiting these places provides a sense of connection, reflection, and education to visitors of all ages. Every year, American’s travel all over the globe in search of new cultures. Visiting cultural attractions in the U.S provides an understanding of a heavily mistreated and neglected culture within American borders. Consider visiting cultural centers, historic monuments, and museums to develop a cultural insight of racial disparities, injustices, and atrocities that have occurred throughout time.

Black LIves Matter Martin Luther King

Follow The Civil Rights Trail

If you are looking to educate yourself on Black History through travel, one of the best ways to start is by following the Civil Rights Trail. The Civil Rights Trail is a national trail expanding across 15 states and offering approximately 100 historic locations. Visiting the stops on this trail educates visitors about the long, imbalanced, and ongoing struggle for African-Americans’ to achieve equal rights. Some of the most famous stops along the trail include the Washington D.C National Mall, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, the location of police confrontations in Selma, Alabama, as well as the historic Edmund Pettus Bridge. Did you know Edmund Pettus was the head of the Alabama Ku Klux Klan? Would’nt be something if they changed the name of the bridge to honor the late John Lewis? I will suggest in detail specific stops to make and black-owned restaurants to eat in while there.

Make New Connections

make new connections

Educating yourself through African-American travel experiences, you can develop a number of strong new connections. While it is impossible to directly relate to the issues that African-Americans have faced throughout history, you can still make connections throughout your experiences. As you visit cultural centers, museums, and monuments, speak with additional visitors, learn about their experiences, their personal history, and that of their families. As you plan African-American travel experiences, be sure to look for ways to build new connections.

Create A Travel Pledge To Fight Racial Injustice

Of course, when you visit new places, it is crucial to create a travel pledge to fight racial injustice. As travelers, we should understand the importance of educating ourselves on different perspectives, cultures, beliefs, and experiences. To start traveling better, stay committed to educating yourself on marginalized groups and underrepresented people when you visit new places. When possible, participate in local protests, have open conversations, and make donations to areas in need. This way, you can continuously work to expanding our learning, and improve the world for more like-minded value travelers.

Travelers all across the globe are planning vacations that honor and show support to the Black Lives Matter movement in the United States. Throughout your travel, there are dozens of cultural landmarks and highlights that you need to visit.  Taking the time to visit these sites empowers you to learn through your travel, follow cultural insights, and make new connections. Consider the points mentioned above to learn about Supporting the Black Lives Matter movement through travel.

The Complete Post-COVID Travel Guide: How To Safely Vacation With Family In 2021

Planning travel should be exciting and stress-free! Perhaps it is a little different now. Look at the 2020 COVID-19 version of the Kentucky Derby as an example. I am here to help you navigate the new world of travel.

Value travelers across the globe are worried about the implications of COVID-19 on their vacation plans. Do you make travel plans? Do you wait it out? Do you have plans and continue with it? Is it touch and go as news comes out about virus hotspots? This is a tough decision to make and it changes week to week.

Airline Cancellations

When it comes to airline cancellations, it can be a bit cloudy, in terms of each airline’s policy. Airlines are in no rush to cancel flights and return your funds. They want to hold on to your cash for as long as they can. You need to be aware to what your rights are and procedures to follow.

The definition of a cancelled flight is if it is removed from the schedule. An airline or two may consider it cancelled if they cannot get you to your destination another way, even if it means connecting flights that may take longer. The Department of Transportation’s (DOT) rules override anything your airline is telling you. If the DOT makes a change to their rulings, it is for bookings going forward. Not retroactive to when you purchased the airline ticket. Check the DOT information based on when you purchased the tickets.

How To Claim A Refund

Claims have increased dramatically. If you contact the airline and you are not satisfied, ask to speak to a supervisor. Not happy after that? Make a claim with the DOT if you believe you are correct. Just because you are not happy with the airline’s decision does not mean you are right. Read the Terms and conditions based on when you purchased.

Many travelers are worried about taking family vacations amidst the COVID pandemic. If you decide you are not comfortable continuing with your trip due to the current health conditions at a destination they will not give you a refund. Best case, they will give you a voucher for further travel with an expiration date. Keep in mind that, when you rebook, you do not get a refund for the unused dollar amount on your voucher if your flight went down in price.

Your best bet is to wait until you are closer to your travel date because the flight may be cancelled as the date gets closer. Some destinations may not allow travel into their location. Then you get your refund. If you cancel your trip, get a voucher, and then they cancel your flight, you do NOT get the refund. You keep the voucher so patience is vital. One way to get a feel if your flight will be cancelled is if you see they stop selling seats for your flight at some point. That is a good sign that a cancellation is probably coming.

Award booking cancellations are more flexible since it does not involve cash. They may charge you a redepositing fee when they return your miles to your account. When you are using an online travel agency (OTA) it may be harder to get a refund. Hotels.com, Orbitz, Travelocity, reward points from Citibank, AMEX and Chase are all examples of OTA’s. Why is it harder? It is a longer process and extra steps to go through. First, the airline has to approve it, then the OTA needs to approve it. Then you need to see what the points program has to say about it.

Hotel Cancellations

Hotel cancellations are much easier to navigate. You may even be able to do so without any hotel points and rewards. Each individual hotel has their own terms and conditions so read them before you book. There is no governing body you can turn to if you are not satisfied.

The future of travel with bookings? Hard to say. Do you use a travel agent, OTA or book direct? If you book with an OTA they have more leverage than you as an individual traveler. Just make sure you use an OTA that has strong financial health. They do much more business with the property than you do. When you book direct it is imperative you closely look at cancellation dates. You miss that date and you are out of luck.

Road Trip Travel

Road trips may become more popular because flights are out of the equation on that type of trip. If you are interested, there are several steps to help you prepare for post COVID travel on the road. Domestic travel will be next to come back and then international. Your lowest risk booking will be using miles.points, and hotels. You can cancel and redeposit for free (look closely at the terms and conditions before booking). The travel world is changing every day and the rules will be changing also. Most likely to benefit the provider so be aware.

Keep this all in mind when planning your New Mexico roadtrip travel itinerary.

The Future Of Airlines

With the health of the airline industry the way it is, will they start devaluing award points? Maybe reduce availability for award travel? It’s hard to say but it may be a good idea to book way out and lock in the trips you want to take in 2021 and beyond. Again, understand cancellation policies prior to booking. Don’t assume they will “work with you” when the time comes.

Airlines will have to get creative to build your confidence in purchasing a ticket. Researchers have already made several travel predictions post Coronavirus about how these changes will impact airlines. Have everyone wear masks. Not sell the middle seats. Give attractive targeted offers to loyalty members. Stop using carts with food and drinks on it. Eliminate in-flight pillows and blankets. Maybe board the back of the plane first to reduce contact on the plane. All good ideas to look at as the new normal.

Travel Documents & Programs

As you prepare for Post-COVID vacationing in 2020, consider the changes in travel documents and programs. Passport renewal services have recently resumed. However, there have been significant delays since its reopening. Since July, travelers in many states are eligible to enroll in the Global Entry Program again. Similarly, the deadline for the new federally approved Real ID identification, which will soon be needed for domestic travel, has additionally been extended.

Post-Travel Precautions

Of course, you still want to take precautions and be safe after you return from your post-COVID vacation. There is always a chance that you may have been exposed to the Coronavirus or other viruses during your travels. Certainly, this can be true even if you feel fine, and are not experiencing any symptoms. Therefore, you should self-monitor for symptoms, isolate yourself, and get tested once you return. Plus, follow all the recommendations from your state and local municipality for after traveling. Certainly, post travel precautions are important when planning your first family vacation with gamers in 2021.

Planning trips will definitely increase as time goes on. With the proper planning, you can even take your family to the post-COVID Disney theme park experience. Just follow the new rules closely and you will be fine.

Stuck In India During A Global Pandemic: A Blessing In Disguise

On occasion we will feature guest posts from other travelers. It is always good to get other perspectives in the world of slow travel! If you enjoy it, please subscribe to Karlie’s website to follow her future adventures!

What began as a journey of spirituality and self discovery while traveling abroad, suddenly had turned into a nightmare. Within 48 hours I went from happily exploring India, to being stranded in the midst of a global pandemic. Something I could have never imagined possible, and certainly was not prepared for. However, I am now in fact grateful for this experience. In this post I will highlight the situation of Covid-19 in India, how it is affecting people here, and my rollercoaster of a ride through it all. I will also discuss how even in the worst situations it is possible to find a positive outlook, and to create a sense of community with people who are much different than you.

I first arrived in India in January 2020. Since then, I completed my 200 hour yoga teacher training in Rishikesh for one month and was truly one of the most pivotal and liberating experiences of my life. Allowing me to not only deepen my physical practice, but to learn lessons in which I will carry with me always. Such as to understand the importance of discipline, how to become more aware/present in each moment, and how to lead a life fueled less by one’s ego.

After my yoga teacher training, my lovely friend Gina from Germany spontaneously decided to join me on an amazing three week adventure in India. During this time, we had the best time together as we traveled to various cities. Stopping in: Delhi, Agra, all throughout the state of Rajasthan, with our final stop being in Goa. From here, Gina would soon go back home to Germany.and I would continue traveling to Sri Lanka. Little did I know however, that this would soon all change very quickly.

Should I Stay Or Should I Go?

While Gina and I were having the times of our lives checking out cultural attractions and landmarks in Rajasthan, things started shifting. Coronavirus had spread across the globe. Progressing at a rapid pace, many countries began to close their borders. It was then, that India finally started to become aware of the severity of the situation. By March 18th, we flew from Udiapur to Goa as planned, shocked by how completely empty airports were. Informed two days later that India was closing its borders on March 22nd; followed shortly after by a nationwide lockdown. Leaving us with a mere 48 hours to plan our future. This news obliterated my future travel plans to Sri Lanka, and had to cancel my flight. Left with the decision if I should go back home to the US or try to wait things out in India. I was completely torn. I then received a notification from my travel insurance, stating that they would help cover the cost of return flights home for members under their political evacuation policy. Therefore, I decided to go home as it was the safest and most logical option for me at the time.

Change of Plans

On the contrary, I soon came to find that the universe had other plans in store for me. As my flight was cancelled the day of. Also, India’s borders were closing the following day, so I was out of time to book another flight home. I then came to the realization that I was in fact stuck in India in the midst of a global pandemic. Something I thought I would never say.
I tried to stay calm as I unpacked my bags and prepared for what lied ahead. I extended my stay at my hostel in Palolem, Goa from the 22nd of March until the April 1st. However, the next day, I was informed that my hostel was “forced” by the government to shut down. Requiring all guests to leave the following morning. Luckily, I was to book a cheap double room in Calangute with three other people.

24 Hours From Hell

The problem was that all public transportation was closed, and Calangute was a two hour car ride away. Out of desperation, we turned to Anoop. A man staying at our hostel for a ride as he had previously rented a car. Which was both a big help as well as a big headache, as this man was crazy. However as they say, “desperate times call for desperate measures”. So there we were: two indian men, a man from Germany, a Romainan woman, and myself stuffed into a tiny car. It was a long, bumpy, and scary ride. Encountering two police road blocks along the way, but we finally made it to Calangute 4 hours later.

Upon arriving, the people who owned the building took one look at our group seeing that there were three foreigners. Immediately declining us accomodation past 1 night as it was a risk. I then remembered I had previously spoken with a manager at a hostel in Calangute. He is a friend of a friend, and offered for me to stay if needed. It also happened to be right down the road, so my friend Vanket and I immediately set out to go talk to him in person . We were told that if we were able to get a medical clearance and got an ok from the police; then maybe we could all stay there.

Feeling hopeful Vanket and I were walking back to our temporary accommodation. We then realized we had not eaten all day. Vanket went into a restaurant to ask for food, but then was thrown out. Arguing with a man about entering private property during the lockdown. Things started getting physical, and then suddenly six other men immediately ran outside and all started ganging up on him. For the first time during all of my travels, it was this moment that I felt complete fear. As I stood there frozen in utter shock of what to do. Luckily, it only lasted a minute or so and Vanket was not severely hurt. We spent the rest of our night filing a report with the police. Obvious to us all that at this point we had hit rock bottom.

Safety At Last

The next morning however, things started to look up. We were soon able to find a hospital and get our medical clearances. The only thing left to do was to convince the hostel to let us all stay there. Although extremely hesitant, they finally allowed us to stay there as they saw how desperate we truly were. Finally after a stressful 24 hours, we were able to relax.
After the initial craziness of lockdown, things for me have been much better. I have everything I can ask for right now: good health, basic necessities, and a safe place to stay. These past six weeks during quarantine have given me much needed time to slow down, practice yoga, meditate, read, spend some time by the beach, and work on my blog. I have also created strong bonds with the other people staying at my hostel, who have become like a second family to me.

In addition, I am extremely fortunate to be located within a “green zone” in Goa, India where there are currently zero active cases of Covid-19. Therefore, Goa is now in a state of relaxation where business, public transportation, and travel within the state are open. This is truly a blessing, as things feel somewhat normal again.

Moving Forward

As for most people, it is still difficult to plan for the future at this time. The lockdown is currently still active and there is a high chance of extension. Countless individuals are facing a horrific reality as they have lost their jobs, are struggling to find food, and/or homeless. I will patiently wait in Goa until lockdown is over and from there make travel plans accordingly.
“Two things define you: Your patience when you have nothing and your attitude when you have everything.”

Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined being in India during a global pandemic, however it has worked out for the best. The experience opened me up to tons of new cultural attractions. Everything we experience has a purpose behind it, and I truly believe that I am exactly where I need to be in this moment. Things in life will happen that are out of our control, but we always have a choice in how we let it affect us. Therefore, I have decided to keep a positive outlook on my situation, and focus on finding gratitude for the simple things in life. I am hopeful that things in the world will start to get better soon, and look forward to traveling again. Until then I will relish in living slowly, and use this time to focus within.

How Cruise Travel After Coronavirus Is Changing The Industry

The outbreak of COVID-19 has completely altered the way we travel as a society. Airlines, hotels, trains, and most importantly, cruise ships have taken a huge hit. Looking past the Coronavirus outbreak, it is likely that cruise travel will return with some changes. Cruise lines have always been a favorite form of traveler for vacationers, especially of those seeking to experience tropical, slow travel vacations. While it may not take the same exact form and capacity as previously, we can look forward to cruising again in the future. Read on to learn more about the cruise travel predictions in a post Coronavirus world.

Changing Ship Demographics

Following the outbreak of COVID-19, There will be a significant change in cruise ship demographics. Historically, with its extreme simplicity, leisure, and ease of travel cruise ships have been an incredibly popular choice amongst senior citizens. Unfortunately, senior citizens are one of the most susceptible to the infectious Coronavirus outbreak. With this being said, it is likely older demographics will hold off on cruise travel until the virus is completely eradicated. This may lead to the innovation of more family friendly vacations, or cruises themed for younger demographics. Again, depending on your perspective, this can either be an added bonus or consequence of cruise travel in a post COVID society.

Cruise Ship Capacity

Concerning the outbreak of the Coronavirus, we predict that you will see a significant change in the capacity of cruise ships. Traditionally, cruise ships have offered on a full capacity model. Major cruise lines offered the biggest, most modern, extensive fleets of ships. Following the outbreak of COVID-19, it is likely the size and capacity of cruise will change dramatically. It is possible that we will see significantly smaller ship designs. Of course, this will make it easier to disconnect on vacation.

Depending on your perspective, this could be considered a future benefit of cruise travel. With smaller ships, expect cruise travel to become more spacious, leisurely, and sustainable. In considering the implications of cruise travel on the post COVID world, consider the expected changes in cruise ship capacity.

Fluctuating Cruise Prices

Immediately following the outbreak of the Coronavirus, You will see a drastic impact in the cost of cruise travel. No matter what your perspective is, this one is a guaranteed bonus of cruise vacation, especially for value travelers. Cruises have historically been one of the most expensive ways to travel. Following COVID, it is likely that cruise prices will drop dramatically.

Cruise lines want your business back following the virus. Cruises will offer more incentives, packages, and lower prices in order to entice travelers to return. Some cruise lines may even begin traveling to new destinations at affordable prices in order to create new travel excitement around rising travel bubbles. Once the Coronavirus has been effectively dealt with in society, most likely we will see an impact on cruise costs.

Altered Cruise Amenities

Following the outbreak of the Coronavirus, expect cruise ship amenities will dramatically change. Cruise ships have constantly prided themselves on detailed amenities. From luxury dining and entertainment options, these amenities have become a staple of cruise travel. However, many of these amenities take place in a large, shared social space. It is already predicted that options like food buffets and waterparks may not return on cruise ships. Cities like Miami have COVID travel restrictions and regulations to follow.

Likely, these drastic changes will impact many additional dining and leisure options offered throughout different cruise lines. Looking past the outbreak of the Coronavirus, we will see cruise ships return with some form of limited amenities.

Limited Destinations

Analyzing conditions following the COVID-19 outbreak, most cruise ships will limit their destinations in some form. During the Coronavirus, health and hygiene standards have been held to an extremely high level. With cruise ships being a multinational business, some of the countries they visit may be restricted. Therefore, it is unlikely to see the same cruise itineraries to luxurious French Polynesian Spas in Tahaa, Bora Bora, Moorea, and the Society Islands.

Some researchers even believe that many cruise lines will cease operations to countries with poor healthcare systems or standards. Through these policies, ships can look to develop itineraries around safe, hygienic travel locations. Once the Coronavirus has been eradicated from modern society, cruise ships will return with some form of limited destinations.

Stricter Health Screenings

As we prepare for the post-Coronavirus travel world, we will see strict health screenings on cruise ships. Enhanced health and safety standards will obviously be a top priority as cruise ships return to business. One major disadvantage of cruise ship is that passengers are constantly getting on and off in new, potentially hazardous destinations. This factor greatly amplifies the chances for the virus to be caught and transmitted amongst staff or passengers. Therefore, as cruise ships prepare to resume operations, extremely strict, stringent health precautions will become the new norm. At a minimum, cruise ships will begin taking passenger temperatures and performing simple health screenings prior to boarding. However, we can also expect to see the expansion of onboard medical centers and improve air filtration units.

New Technologies For Safety

Further, the cruise travel industry is changing after the coronavirus pandemic by integrating new technologies. Many cruise ships are implementing sterilization robots. These robotic technologies allow the ships to raise the level of hygiene. In fact, the cruise industry is moving towards hospital-like sanitation standards. This would lead to a safer, healthier cruise travel after COVID-19. With the rise of automated cleaning systems, cruise tourism will surely gain confidence with travelers.

The Coronavirus outbreak has completely altered the future of cruise vacations. As the virus continues to be researched and analyzed, it is likely it will impact cruise travel as a whole. First, the outbreak of the virus will have a detrimental impact on the capacity that cruise ships generally take. Expect passenger demographics will also change from older individuals to younger travelers and families. At the same time, the virus will have a serious impact on the prices charged by cruise ships. Many researchers even predict the virus will have a significant impact on the amenities offered by cruise lines.

Furthermore, with the outbreak of COVID-19, there is a chance that it will have an additional impact on the destinations traveled to by popular cruise lines. Consider the points mentioned above to learn more about the cruise travel predictions in a post Coronavirus world.

How To Experience The Power Of Slow Travel Vacations On Your Next Trip

Many modern vacationers are applying slow travel trends to their upcoming trips. When I travel, my personal preference is to dive into the local scene focusing more on experiences than counting how many sights to see. Why? Because when you try to fit in as many attractions and historical sites as possible, you are rushing through destinations instead of delving deep enough into a few to soak them in.

I like taking part in local rituals and routines and connecting with the place through events, food and culture. Spend more time doing less things.

I call this “slow travel.” It involves focusing on fewer places in depth, focusing on quality over quantity. There are several ways to embrace and enjoy the slow travel concept. It’s all about getting to know one place well! Taking the time to learn about and enjoy the slow travel concept can greatly boost your vacationing experience. No matter where your next destination may be, there is always something to gain from slow travel around the world.

The slow travel movement encourages vacationers to take the time to look around, observe and discover, be present in the moment free of outside thoughts. That’s an integral way to take pleasure from your travel(s).

Have your plan A attractions in mind but don’t purchase non-refundable tickets in advance. Beautiful day out? Skip the all day museum. Rainy or cold day? Great day for the museum or cultural attraction. Spent a few days in a row running around? Take a train and spend the next day in a small town in the countryside.

Don’t overbook your trip with “must-sees” or “must-do’s” unless they really excite you. Just because others may say, “you have to go here” or “you can’t miss this” doesn’t mean you should abide and miss out on potential gems they did not discover. Embrace slow travel trends by taking the time to enjoy the locations you are most interested in. In Paris, I gave up a full day in the Louvre to just enjoy cafe’s, window shopping and a stop in a much smaller, but spectacular Rodin Museum. The weather was just too nice and I was in Paris!

If you want to go visit a tourist attraction, do so because you want to; not because you read that it’s popular.

Choose Top Slow Travel Destinations

Before you embark on your journey, it is essential to research slow travel destinations. These types of trips allow you to relax and reconnect. Of course, there might be less going on during these vacations. However, that’s what they are popular for. For example, European countries are popular slow travel destinations. This is because there are plentiful vacation rentals, efficient public transportation systems, and historic attractions are relatively close together. This gives you more time to soak in the atmosphere of each site. Remember that slow travel is mindset, not a destination. However, research can elevate your experience to the next level.

Eliminate Complex Itineraries

One of the largest pitfalls when traveling to new places is following a strict, rigid itinerary. Developing an itinerary seems like the logical thing to do, especially on important family vacations. With a complex plan in place, you can effectively squeeze as much into your vacation as possible. Only one problem. Planning out every aspect of your day tends to cause a phenomenon known as traveler burnout. When you do not have the freedom to choose what to do, your trip can appear more like a chore than a vacation. Keep open times in order to try new things and be spontaneous. Ask locals, servers, or bartenders for recommendations on the best things to see in town. Often, the best sites are not the top ones listed on the top travel sites.

Avoid Whirlwind Tours

While visiting a destination or region, I suggest avoiding whirlwind tours because chances are, you’re rushing through it all. You’re missing out on the spontaneity; the enjoyable experience of taking your time to stop and smell the roses. Slow travel embraces enjoying yourself, relaxing, and making your trip as enjoyable as possible. Even worse, you will be throwing away valuable days getting from location 1 to location 2 to location 3 with luggage. Dealing with checkout times and check-in times can make for unexciting and  wasted days.

Take A Road Trip

Taking a spontaneous road trip is one of the best slow travel theories. A good road trip encourages you to slow down, take in the scenery, and enjoy the ride. Consider a relaxing road trip with no hard destination in mind.

Freely traveling your destination provides you the greatest understanding of what each location has to offer. Most popular tourist cities have local establishments that allow you to rent a daily car or scooter incredibly inexpensive if you are flying.

Take a slow-paced, enjoyable road trip as you implement slow travel strategies into your next trip.

Go To The Markets

I love interacting and observing the locals at markets. Using the slow travel concept, designate yourself time to browse and shop at local markets. Try the foods destinations are most known for, ask questions, and meet new people. Eat the street food, soak in the scene and wander aimlessly. People watch, have a picnic in the park, see a local band, attend a festival. See the local sports team.

Keep your options open- most cities have same day deep discounts on theaters and music events. Check out the local entertainment guides to see what is happening the week you are there. You might catch a spectacular show at a community theatre or see a local band. Both inexpensive entertainment options!

Leave Time To Relax

Following the best destination slow travel strategies, you increase the relaxation you experience throughout your trip. At the end of the day, relaxation is an integral part of your vacation. Following slow travel practices ensures this aspect does not go overlooked. By relaxing, you won’t be following a rigid, strict schedule, even while you’re having fun, it can be stressful to follow.

It’s all about having a mindset that whatever happens is just part of the experience; let those experiences also come to you.

Rather than doing a 10-day London, Paris and Amsterdam trip, for example, I suggest staying longer in two countries. It will give you the chance to see some more of England or France. Get out into the countryside and see some villages.

Take a trip up to Liverpool to soak in some Beatles heritage. Go to wineries in France. Following the art of slow travel, take the time to relax, and soak up what each destination has to offer.

Start Stumbling

Start stumbling across hidden gems and attractions as you embark on your slow travel journey. Travel should emphasize freedom. The ability to do and see whatever you choose. You eliminate that freedom if you stick to a rigid schedule. Stumble into places! Ask locals for their favorite restaurants. Don’t get me wrong, during your research you will see some things that get you very excited and you should plan on doing it. Don’t just pack it in all day, everyday because then you may miss out on some local surprises.

Becoming a Knowledgeable Resource of an Area – AKA Being A Local – Is One of My Favorite Parts of Travel

I enjoy staying with locals with AirBnb’s. I ride the public transportation routes to where I want to go each day. Next, I try to find out where the locals go eat. I like to go to their market(s) or grocery store.Staying and Spending your time Around Locals Is MUCH Less Expensive than booking accommodations in the tourist districts. This is a key value travel vs budget travel difference. Gift shops galore, overpriced restaurants and crowds are why I stay away from the tourist areas. I would rather travel to the congested area when seeing an attraction or museum that excites me. Transportation costs may get pricey in those areas…Staying elsewhere eliminates that $$ factor.

Create Memorable Experiences

Slow Travel has created some memorable memories for me on my trips. For example, instead of booking my day solid on a day we were going to an Edmonton Oilers game that evening (as we enjoy Sabres hockey games too), we walked around the downtown area right next to the arena and ran into the Senior VP of Communications for the Edmonton Oilers. We told him we came all the way from Florida to see the Oilers and he told us he would give us a behind the scenes Oilers experience before the game. He was elated that we came all the way from South Florida and he told us he got engaged to his wife in Florida. Then, he showed us an exclusive look at Wayne Gretzky memorabilia inside the arena and showed us the team’s executive offices. He even tried to get us to meet Wayne Gretzky but he was in a meeting at the time. None of this happens if we had a full day of plans in advance.

Walk The City

On another day we just wanted to walk the city and see some nice neighborhoods. We opened the local newspaper after breakfast to find that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was holding a town hall meeting in Edmonton the very next day. Very rare to see the person in charge of the country speak to its citizens in a relaxed setting! We had planned to go a hockey game that night but said this was once-in-a-lifetime and it was good we did not get our hockey tickets in advance. Speaking of hockey, check out our updated guide on seeing a Buffalo Sabres game in 2021. We always buy our tickets at the last minute so we can keep our options open for something better.

Keep Free Days

Following the slow travel methodology encourages to keep some days of your trip free and open. When you plan tours, sightseeing, and attractions back-to-back, you will find yourself rushing through your trip. Slow travel ensures you take in all each site has to offer. By having that day open up to attend this town hall meeting at the local university, we got there early to wait in line. We happened to be first on line! Additionally, you’ll be open to many more things to do in Winnipeg or wherever your slow travel destination is.

As we waited hours to get in I met a girl I eventually dated for a while and shared an amazing day there. Prime Minister Trudeau found out from one of his aides that we were first in line to see him and were the only Americans in the crowd of 1000 people. He came over to us afterwards and took pictures with us and was genuinely touched we chose him over the beloved Oilers that night. Hearing all of the concerns and issues of the citizens of Edmonton and the answers from Trudeau was the best experience a traveler can encounter in this way.

On my visit to Glendale, AZ I kept one day free to roam around. I heard about a local market and it was a beautiful day to do the Peoria Farmers Market. It was an unexpected prickly pear chai tea, vegan eggnog macarons, pitted dates that tasted like dessert, chocolate and fruit bowl with peanut butter and coconut kind of day. No need to run all day, just soak it all in.

Opt For Slower Forms Of Transportation

At the same time, think about opting for slower, more peaceful, quaint, and scenic forms of transportation. This trend has especially become popular throughout Canada and the United States. Here, tourists are increasingly opting for scenic, picturesque train travel itineraries compared to airplanes. Other slower forms of travel, such as by bicycle, walking, or river cruise have additionally become popular. In fact, you may even want to consider planning a roadtrip travel itinerary. Indeed, opt for slower forms of transportation to immerse yourself in true slow travel experiences.

Embrace Slow Travel

Slow travel enables you to be surprised and discover off the beaten path activities and not be as much of a tourist. Follow these tactics during all the best travel experiences in the US. You can come across more authentic neighborhoods, meet and create friendships and find where the best restaurants and shops are for locals. By staying longer in an area, it will feel more like a home than a vacation destination. You won’t be rushing activities nor living with a rigid schedule. Get to know a place.

Relax, have fun, and don’t rush things during your trip. Stop and sense all that is around you. Surprises have been some of my favorite parts of previous travels.

Don’t be concerned with “checking off all the boxes”. Your best memories will be the people you meet and things you did not plan. You can always go back one day!

Finding Free City Tours With The Chicago Greeter Program Guided Service

Visiting Chicago is one of the best travel experiences in the US and there is a terrific, and FREE way to see and learn about it all.

It’s called the Chicago Greeter program.

The Chicago Greeter program is one of the few ways to see all the Windy City has to offer without paying steep prices for sightseeing tours or individual tour guides.

The program is an excellent way to get an in-depth, engaging, and personable tour based on your specific interests. With the program, you can experience historical site absolutely free all over Chicago. Read on to learn how Chicago Greeter delivers the ultimate city getaway.

What Is a Chicago Greeter?

Greeters are Chicago residents and volunteers dedicated to showing visitors their city. Don’t think of greeters as a tour guide. These touring programs are available in many major US cities. In fact, you may be able to find a greeter to help you experience the best things to do in Boston this year.

Rather, consider them more like a friend.

Experienced greeters can introduce you with the city’s most notable spots, hidden gems, and famous treasures. The places greeters may show you may not always be listed within travel guides or on top websites, but they are sure to create a long-lasting, memorable travel experience.

These value travel tours are one of my favorite things to do to kick off a trip. All you have to do is fill out the application and send it in at least two weeks before your requested date.
You also have to list the area of interest you have in seeing. Historical sites? An ethnic neighborhood? General walking tour?

Greeter tours specialize in a number of unique interests based on culture, flavor, history, or general entertainment. Most tours are offered in over a dozen languages to support international visitors.

Chicago Greeter Program Rules

Before you pack your bags and get your smartphone travel ready, you need to familiarize yourself with the program rules. The Greeter program is a great way for out-of-town visitors to see the city. Despite this, there are a few rules to determine your eligibility.

First off, the limit of people in your group is six or less. Tours cannot be scheduled on the day you arrive in Chicago because of potential travel delays.

Anybody going on the tour must be an out-of-town visitor. No locals.

Many tours additionally ask you to fill out the name of your lodging accommodations. Before you take the time to research and schedule a tour with a Greeter, make sure you are eligible under the rules in place.

Greeter Tours And Options

Over the years, greeters have sought to offer several unique tours and options. Most commonly, visitors choose between tours for special interests or tours for neighborhoods.

Interest tours range from distinct cultures, history, architecture, or cuisine tours. Neighborhood tours operate out of areas such as Downtown Chicago, Hyde Park, or Millennium Park.

Consider your personal interests so that you can use greeters to get the ideal tour of the city.

We chose an Architectural walking tour because the city is so well known for that and we would not know any history behind the buildings we are looking at.

If you appreciate architecture, Chicago is ground zero for beauty and historical significance. First, you sit down with your guide and come up with a game plan when you meet at the location they give you. You will go over timeframe and any other last minute requests by you. If you are a history lover, Chicago is one of the best places to go for Veterans Day.

Knowledgeable greeters can inform you of the story, history, and add perspective to all the scenery Chicago has to offer. The greeter brings your walking tour to life!

Wide Range Of Volunteers

Chicago Greeters provide you with a wide range of volunteers to guarantee a unique experience. They are a prime example of volunteer travel voluntourism in action.

With all greeters being volunteers, you can guarantee a tour truly fueled by passion and excitement. The greeter program provides the best volunteers to guarantee all travelers are able to receive their ideal tour and city vacation.

Our Chicago Greeters Program Review

In our case it ended up being a three hour  walking tour inside the Loop and hit all the masterpieces there. We must have walked 4-5 miles in total so be prepared with great walking shoes, especially on hard cement.

This is much different than a paid tour that you can sign up for. Throughout she kept asking us how we felt about what she was showing and if it was along the lines in what we wanted. If we wanted to shift gears into some other ideas other than architecture she was willing and able.

Our guide Christine’s knowledge of the city was so strong it came to life for us. Every time we passed any of these buildings throughout the rest of our trip there we knew exactly what we were looking at and the history behind it.

She even had access to the Chicago Architectural Museum and saved us a fortune and got us in for free and we looked around there for 30 minutes and also saw a fantastic 15 -minute movie they show there. This is one of the best cultural attractions we’ve been to.

Other Chicago Greeter Tours

Hate architecture and love food? Go to an ethnic neighborhood and try local specialties there. My advice- pick something you don’t know anything about.

Chances are, you will be uniquely surprised with what the city has to offer. My interest and enjoyment of the different timelines and styles of buildings downtown had grown tremendously in those short three hours. So fascinating to hear the stories behind the detail in each building.

Most tours signify historically significant or largely traffic areas. Tours of Hyde Park, for example, encompass the University of Chicago and the Museum of Science & Industry. However, you can stop at other potential locations, such as Barack Obama’s barber shop, within the same tour.

If you do not have any specific interests when you visit the city, pick something entirely new to you. You might end up finding something that interests you more than you thought.

Our Favorite Spots On A Chicago Greeter Tour

Here are some of our favorite spots you can see on a family vacation:

  • You can see local boy Frank-Lloyd Wright’s The Rookery, where he kept his office.

  • The Art Deco late 1920’s Carbide and Carbon and the Chicago Board of Trade.

  • Late 19th century Marquette and Monadnock Buildings.

  • The largest Tiffany ceiling in the U.S. 1893 Chicago Cultural Center

The Beaux Arts style of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Michigan Ave Bridge.

Chicago Greeter Tours Timing

Before you book your free Chicago Greeter tour, there are several considerations to take in regards to time. Free Chicago Greeter Tours are offered year round in the city, so you can still go for a tour even during winter weekends. A single guided tour is roughly two to four hours, depending on the type of tour you select. To ensure availability, it is essential to register for your Greeter tour at least ten days in advance of your scheduled date. Remember that the tours are incredibly popular, and availability is consistently changing due to high demand.

Where Else To See?

8 Must-Visit Cultural Tourist Attractions You Need To Visit In Detroit Michigan

Are you planning a big trip to Detroit, Michigan, but don’t know where to go? Well, I’m here to help!

First and foremost, plan your transportation around the attractions. When arriving from the airport and if you are staying in downtown Detroit, take the 261 Eastbound bus for only $2 vs taxi/UBER for $40.

Although the city is not as touristy as the best Colorado adventures, the top things to do in Detroit are much more educational, historical and cultural. In my experience, you must visit the best Detroit cultural attractions to fully experience the city.

From the history that encompasses the Motor City to the stunning architecture that makes up the skyline, Detroit is full of cultural and historical sites.

If you are currently planning a trip to Michigan and want to visit this great city, I highly recommend that you stop at the following cultural highlights and landmarks.

“The Fist” in downtown Hart Plaza representing Joe Louis

The Detroit Institute Of Arts

One of the first places that I explored after arriving in Michigan was the Detroit Institute of Arts. There, you can discover how much man’s artistic abilities have changed over time.

You can walk through more than 100 galleries and see over 65,000 pieces of art. These works come from all over, including Africa, medieval Europe and, of course, America.

We found the displays fascinating as they compare not only the cultural differences between locations, but also the differences between time periods.

When going to the Detroit Institute of Arts, you can also catch the free guided tour (with admission) Tues-Sun at 1, Sat-Sun at 3 or Friday at 6. There are plenty of opportunities to learn about the history of art.

If you want to take a deep dive into art’s transformation, this might be one of the best attractions to see in Detroit.

Bert’s Warehouse Theatre

In terms of the best attractions to see in Detroit, Bert’s Warehouse Theatre is a must-visit. The theater is located in the Bert’s Market Place where you can also find the Motown Room and the Jazz Room.

When visiting, you can catch some local entertainment or possibly a Motown show like we did. If you are a fan of jazz, this is one of the best places to visit in the city. To maintain your value travel ambitions, there are several ways to get show tickets for less than $100.

However, you can also catch some blues shows or attend open mic night on the weekends. There are so many entertainment options waiting for you at Bert’s Warehouse Theatre or this Motown studio.

Motown Studios

That’s why I highly recommend making the trip to see this cultural attraction.

Also, here’s video of a Motown Go Go show:

The Ford Piquette Avenue Plant

Additionally, consider taking a trip to The Ford Piquette Avenue Plant, AKA the “birthplace of the Model T”.

This is one of the best historical attractions in Detroit if you are a fan of automobiles. The building was the second automobile production center for the ever-popular Ford Motor Company.

Today, you can tour the factory and learn about the Model T’s history. The place is rather accommodating and can make arrangements for longer tours if you are interested in extensive options.

After you finish visiting the plant, stop at the Bucharest Grill for lunch. It is right down the street and has delicious Shawarma sandwich options for just $5.95.

You won’t regret this trip! The Ford Plant is one of the best attractions in Detroit and the lunch after is unbeatable. If you want to see more incredible museums, check out the top Santa Fe tours and museums.

The Guardian Building

Among the many cultural attractions in Detroit MI, the Guardian Building is one that stands out. If you enjoyed the historical sites in North Carolina, you will surely appreciate this building.

The building dates all the way back to 1928. Many travelers visit the attraction because it is a prime example of Art Deco architecture.

If you can appreciate stunning architecture when you see it, you will be left in absolute amazement. Right when you enter the lobby, you will see gorgeous, extravagant Pewabic and Rookwood tile.

From the outside, you can view the unbelievably beautiful and intricate building designs. If you stay long enough, you’ll even notice that the Guardian Building’s extraordinary stained-glass windows resemble a cathedral’s.

Take your camera along for this Detroit trip because you’ll want to remember how magnificent the attraction is.

Professional Sports

The professional sports attractions in Detroit also showcase the city’s culture. You can get a pretty good idea of how much the sports fans love their teams just by attending one game.

If you are a football fan, try to catch a Lions game at Ford Field. Here’s a glimpse of the action:

They play eight home games between September and December, so you have multiple opportunities to attend one of these fun and exciting games.

You can also see the Detroit Pistons play professional basketball at the Little Caesars Arena in Midtown. If you aren’t a basketball fan, maybe hockey is more up your alley. You can buy tickets to a Red Wings hockey game right at the same arena.

As a fan of the NFL, NBA and NHL, you can see all of the above teams play during the same trip. The Little Caesars Arena is walking distance from Ford Field, so you do not even need to pay for transportation to visit the best sports attractions or experience the great sports culture of Detroit. If you are a sports travel lover, check out our guide on the ultimate New Orleans Saints gameday experience at the Superdome.

Certainly, sports fans will not want to miss out on these exhilarating attractions. If you like to party beforehand, Detroit offers numerous sports for tailgating at games.

Detroit Historical Museum

When you visit Detroit Michigan, you need to pay a visit to the city historical museum. Detroit’s Historical Museum is an excellent historical center celebrating the past of the Motor City. Here, you can learn about how Detroit earned its nickname as the Motor City, as well as its reputation that carries through today. Learn about how residents used to live, the history of the city, and the classic Detroit way of life by visiting the city historical museum.

The Henry Ford

Of course, be sure to stop by The Henry Ford on your cultural visit to Detroit Michigan. The Henry Ford is a massive outdoor/indoor museum complex that features tons of classic Americana. Here, visitors can see the world-famous Kennedy Limousine, Rosa Parks Bus, and Abraham Lincoln Chair. Outside, be sure to explore Greenfield Village, where you will see an amazing recreation of Thomas Edison’s Laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey. Also, you can see the Wright Cycle Co., where the Wright Brothers first begun experimenting with aviation. Moreover, consider stopping by the Art Deco beauties to admire their brilliant, jaw-dropping architecture. Don’t forget to stop at professional sports attractions to see NFL, NHL and NBA games too.

When the time comes to really leave, don’t forget to take the 261 Westbound bus instead of a taxi! You’ll want to keep what’s left of your money for your next big adventure. You will especially need it if you want to eat at the best restaurants in New Orleans.
