Our guide Christine’s knowledge of the city was so strong it came to life for us. Every time we passed any of these buildings throughout the rest of our trip there we knew exactly what we were looking at and the history behind it.
She even had access to the Chicago Architectural Museum and saved us a fortune and got us in for free and we looked around there for 30 minutes and also saw a fantastic 15 -minute movie they show there. This is one of the best cultural attractions we’ve been to.
Other Chicago Greeter Tours
Hate architecture and love food? Go to an ethnic neighborhood and try local specialties there. My advice- pick something you don’t know anything about.
Chances are, you will be uniquely surprised with what the city has to offer. My interest and enjoyment of the different timelines and styles of buildings downtown had grown tremendously in those short three hours. So fascinating to hear the stories behind the detail in each building.
Most tours signify historically significant or largely traffic areas. Tours of Hyde Park, for example, encompass the University of Chicago and the Museum of Science & Industry. However, you can stop at other potential locations, such as Barack Obama’s barber shop, within the same tour.
If you do not have any specific interests when you visit the city, pick something entirely new to you. You might end up finding something that interests you more than you thought.

Chicago Greeter Tours Timing
Before you book your free Chicago Greeter tour, there are several considerations to take in regards to time. Free Chicago Greeter Tours are offered year round in the city, so you can still go for a tour even during winter weekends. A single guided tour is roughly two to four hours, depending on the type of tour you select. To ensure availability, it is essential to register for your Greeter tour at least ten days in advance of your scheduled date. Remember that the tours are incredibly popular, and availability is consistently changing due to high demand.

Before you book your free Chicago Greeter tour, consider what else you would like to see. There’s only one home of bourbon- 14 distilleries within 45 minutes of downtown Lexington.
One surefire way to pester a Kentuckian is to confuse bourbon with whiskey.
True bourbon is made only in the States. Kentucky produces 95% of Bourbon and the best place to try is along the bourbon trail, which takes you to different distilleries.
The label can’t say “bourbon” unless it is distilled in the US, and it can’t say “Kentucky Bourbon” unless it is distilled in Kentucky.
The only thing you can add to Bourbon is water: no added colors or flavors allowed. Bourbon can only be aged in new, charred American white oak barrels. That other stuff can age in re-used barrels.
Bourbon must be at least 51% corn. The rest of the recipe might contain other grains, but the exact mash bill is top secret.
By law, bourbon must go in the barrel no higher than 125 proof and be bottled no lower than 80 proof.
Just about every distiller adds water to the final product, not to save money but to balance the ABV, flavor and color. Some bourbons get bottled up uncut.
So many variables can affect the outcome of bourbon — from the weather to the location of a barrel in a warehouse — most distillers blend a range of barrels to create an end bourbon that’s fairly consistent. Unless it’s single barrel.
That means no blending — what came out of the barrel goes into the bottle (with maybe a touch of water).
Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve 20 Year

They release stock once a year and retailers lucky enough to carry it hold lotteries to decide who gets to buy a bottle.
After that, resellers ask upwards of $2,000.

Connoisseurs call it the best bourbon whiskey in the world.
Should you get a hold of some, expect a velvety-ish smooth texture, notes of leather and smoke, with a balanced finish.
Maker’s Mark Distillery – Loretto, KY
This is a favorite tour on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail for several reasons.
The tour gives a fabulous insight to the making of bourbon; the property is gorgeous and the bourbon is delicious.
To get to Maker’s Mark you’ll drive through rural Kentucky.
One lane roads snake through the hills and farms, and you may wonder if you are going to the right place!
Seemingly in the middle of nowhere is the beautiful property of Maker’s Mark.
Before bourbon goes into the barrel to age, it’s clear, fiery, and not delicious. The magic of the barrels brings the mellowness, the vanilla, the amber color and the depth.
The limestone shelf where the distillery is located is key to crafting the unique taste of Maker’s Mark – the only distillery with its own water source and watershed.
Kentucky limestone filters out iron from water, which is unpleasant in bourbon.
The pure calcium- and magnesium-rich water surrounding the distillery makes better drinking water and a better sour mash in which yeast can flourish.
Star Hill Provisions is located on the campus in the beautifully renovated Distiller’s House. The menu offered at the distillery’s restaurant changes seasonally and features locally sourced and inspired ingredients.
I absolutely loved the menu there!
If you visit one distillery on the Bourbon Trail, make sure it is Maker’s Mark with lunch at the café.
Give yourself two hours minimum here. The grounds are beautiful and the tour itself is interactive and takes you throughout the entire process.
Woodford Reserve Distillery – Versailles, KY
Nestled amid the rolling hills of bluegrass and thoroughbred farms sits the historic Woodford Reserve Distillery.
It’s one of Kentucky’s oldest and smallest distilleries.
They also boast one of the few heat cycled barrelhouses in the world, ensuring every drop seeps into the charred and toasted white oak, giving Woodford Reserve its color and signature flavor.
That is really a key contribution to its phenomenal taste.
Glenn’s Creek Cafe is a small cafe in their Visitors Center where they serve sandwiches, salads and soups and bourbon trail chili. There is a patio right outside the cafe where you can eat and relax.
Woodford Reserve is a first-class tour on the Bourbon Trail. Guides take the time to explain the entire process of making small batch bourbon. Woodford is the smoothest-sipping bourbon I’ve had.
Bill Murray signed this barrel at the distillery just days before I was there.
This is a distillery to put high on your list.
Horses and Racing: Breeding,

There’s only one horse capital of the world and that’s Lexington.
There are 450 horse farms and it is the center of the thoroughbred breeding universe.

These tours are reasonably priced and you can line up your whole vacation in one shot. You just need to show up at your allotted time at the farm location.
I used them for all three of the tours I selected and it went seamlessly.
Mill Ridge Farm
You’re able to see mares, foals, and yearlings up close and in the pasture. I could pet across the fence and fed carrots to them.
The grounds were impeccable and the interaction with the horses is a highlight of the visit.
I felt the passion, pride, and love for horses in this sixth-generation farm.
While on tour and learning about breeding horses and what life looks like for a racehorse, the home-grown authenticity of Mill Ridge and their values was inspiring and exciting.
Old Friends Retirement Farm- Georgetown, KY
A tour of the Old Friends Farm in Georgetown, just north of, Lexington, is a remarkable place to spend an afternoon.
To some, it triggers a rush of highlight memories of some of thoroughbred racing’s greatest stars. Those horses are now in retirement there.
The last time we saw these greats were while winning Breeders Cup races and other marquee events. War Emblem and Silver Charm are the biggest names.
Superstar Silver Charm 1997 Derby and Preakness winner. The amazing thing is he was edged out for the Triple Crown by Touch Gold who now spends their retirement days together at this retirement farm.
They each won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes but both fell short of winning the Triple Crown.
I learned Touch Gold, another well-known horse, isn’t as warm as his paddock neighbor, Silver Charm. But to say it was cool to be with both would be an understatement.
The tour is thorough, intimate, educational and memorable.
Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux made a surprise appearance at this retirement farm while we were there. He won Derby and the Preakness three times each! He wanted to spend some time with his old friend who he was the primary jockey through the years.
Popcorn Deelites, whose only claim to racing fame was starring in the film Seabiscuit, also lives there.
Coolmore at Ashford Stud
It was one highlight of my trip being able to tour while American Pharoah and Justify were in residence this spring.
American Pharoah- Triple Crown winner 2015The one and only Justify. Triple Crown winner 2018. He retired undefeated. He was purchased as a Yearling for $400,000 and was sold after his Triple Crown for 72 Million!
It thrilled me I could see both recent Triple Crown champions, and if you go, you can. Just double check if they are in residence when you plan on going.

The Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville celebrates the life of Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali, one of Kentucky’s favorite sons.
A boxing robe – a gift from Elvis
The “People’s Champion” spent much of his post-boxing life traveling the world, spreading wisdom and the message of world peace and harmony.
You’ll learn about that, but also get to take a brilliant stroll through Ali’s fighting history, from his Gold Medal victory in Rome as Cassius Clay, to the Frazier trilogy of fights, to his stunning win over George Foreman in the “Rumble in the Jungle.”

The movies in the museum bring him to life, and I felt like I learned so much about him when I left that museum.
Over fifty years after he burst upon the scene as a gold-medal winner at the 1960 Olympics, in Rome, Muhammad Ali remains a magical figure, known and loved throughout the world.
His accomplishments in the ring were the stuff of legend. But there was always far more to Muhammad than what took place in a boxing ring.
Muhammad’s life and career played out as much on the front pages of national and international newspapers as on the inside sports pages.
His early embrace of the Nation of Islam and his insistence on being called Muhammad Ali instead of his “slave name,” Cassius Clay, heralded a new era in black pride.
He was the recipient of countless awards, one of the most notable being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Baseball Bats: Louisville Slugger
Allow around two hours to enjoy the museum and factory experience.
Guided factory tours depart every 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the season. Factory tours last approximately 30 minutes. Guests will see bats being made on every tour.
Everyone receives a miniature souvenir bat at the end of the tour!
According to company legend, a 17-year-old Bud Hillerich for Pete Browning created the first pro bat in 1884. Browning was a megastar on Louisville’s major league team, the Eclipse.
One afternoon, Bud skipped out of work to watch the Eclipse play. He saw Browning break his bat and offered to make a new one at the woodworking shop.
According to the story, in the next game Browning got three hits with the bat Bud made. Pete Browning’s nickname was, “The Louisville Slugger.”
The Hillerich’s baseball bat business grew. The name “Louisville Slugger” became their registered trademark in 1894.
The success of the growing bat company took another leap in 1905 when Honus “The Flying Dutchman” Wagner, a superstar shortstop for the Pittsburgh Pirates, signed a contract as the first player ever to endorse a bat.
His autograph was also the first to be used on a bat and the first time a professional athlete endorsed an athletic product.
H&B’s wood bat business branched out into aluminum bats in 1970 and moved its factory just over the Ohio River to Southern Indiana from 1970 to 1995 when the company needed more production room.
The corporate headquarters always remained in Louisville.
H&B owns about 6,500 acres of timberland in Pennsylvania and New York.
I learned at the factory that the best timber comes from parts of Pennsylvania, New York and other northeastern states where the terrain and climate are most favorable to its growth.
Birth of Fried Chicken
688 US Hwy 25W, Corbin, KY
Dine where it all began – at Harland Sanders original restaurant in Corbin.
Built in 1937, Sanders Cafe is like stepping back when the Colonel created his secret of 11 herbs and spices for that “finger lickin’” good chicken.
There are exhibits featuring artifacts and memorabilia from the early days of Kentucky Fried Chicken.
He had many professions including running a gas station in Corbin.
He was cooking his own fried chicken and selling it to his customers as they filled up their gas tanks and found that the sales of his chicken were surpassing the money he was making on the fill-ups.
By 1932, he had to create a restaurant because of the popularity of Sanders Café Chicken and in 1952, renamed Kentucky Fried Chicken.
In 1964, he sold the whole empire and agreed to be the chain’s mascot and making appearances. He died in 1980. The city of Corbin unveiled a life-sized bronze statue of him in Sanders Park in Corbin.
Cave Hill Cemetery – Louisville
Clay/Ali, a Louisville native, was laid to rest on June 10 at Cave Hill Cemetery.
He originally had a simple marker, under his wish to remain humble, but in Oct. 2016 his grave was given a more elaborate monument.

Follow the green line on the cemetery roads and it will take you right to the spot.
Colonel Harland Sanders’s Grave Site – Section 33
Colonel Harland Sanders is clear across the property.
The Colonel has his own line, in chicken yellow.
His monument, which includes a bronze bust designed by his daughter Margaret, is suggestive of the KFC headquarters building.
Pete Browning – Section A
A professional baseball player and one of the best right-handed hitters and fighters ever.
Used John Hillerich’s bats to create the Louisville Slugger.
Patty Hill – Section G
A kindergarten teacher who wrote the “Happy Birthday” song. She wrote it with her sister Mildred.
According to the sisters, they penned the “Happy Birthday” melody in the 1890s for Patty’s kindergarten students. At first, they called it “Good Morning to All,” and sung each morning in class.
When a student’s birthday arrived, the class would replace the “Good Morning to All” lyrics with “Happy Birthday to You.”
Take A Hike In Red River Gorge
Before you leave Louisville and Lexington, spend some time hiking at Red River Gorge. This beautiful canyon system is located right in the heart of the Daniel Boone National Forest. Of course, hiking trails are most widely recognized for their spectacular caves and rock formations. At the same time, the Red River, which runs directly through the gorge is a magnificent sight to see. For photos, stop by the Natural Bridge. This impressive sandstone arch stands at over fifty feet high and seventy-five feet long. Also, you’ll see plenty of rock climbers in the area. Kentucky Rushmore 1583 Bardstown Rd, Louisville
At the corner of Bonnycastle and Bardstown Rds.
The Kentucky Rushmore mural depicts Kentucky icons Muhammad Ali, Abraham Lincoln, Colonel Sanders and Secretariat.
Originally conceived to be a giant mountain sculpture, the project failed because of budget issues but artist Margaret Morely has brought it to life.
247 Water St, Lexington
Kentucky Theatre is 214 E Main Street, the street behind is Water St.
A 60-ft tall mural painted in 2013 by artist Eduardo Kobra depicts DC’s Lincoln Memorial sculpture overlaid with hallucinogenic colors and checkered clown pants.

On the corner of West 6th Street and Bellaire Avenue in Lexington, art seekers can find a large mural of horses created by street artist Gaia. Known for his use of animals in various forms, Gaia is a Brooklyn native but creates art in public spaces around the world.
This large mural features five thoroughbred horses leaping and you can find it in front of West Sixth Brewery.
Jennifer Lawrence
East Louisville/Kammerer Middle School – Nice area to visit and drive through to trace her roots.
At 14 years old, during her 2004 NYC summer trip, Lawrence impressed agents with her auditions. She spent that summer in New York City.
Her home is off Blankenbaker Lane while going to school nearby at Kammerer Middle School. Her parents still own the house and Jennifer visits often.
The highest-paid actress in 2015 and 2016 is one of the most famous people to come from Louisville.

I HIGHLY Recommend
Go through the factory tour to learn about car parts, days and evenings of work at the factory, to learn how many cars they complete in a day, among many other car-lover’s tidbits.
I am not a car-lover, but I loved learning more about production on the Toyota Camry and the inner workings of the factory.
Make reservations weeks in advance because they fill up quickly for this free tour. No walking involved. You are driven around with a knowledgeable driver/guide. 16 people to an open air vehicle.
Eats
Star Hill Provisions Loretto, KY – Maker’s Mark Distillery. The menu changes seasonally and features locally sourced and inspired ingredients. I loved the chef’s fried chicken special and the bourbon slushie.
Breakfast at Rick’s White Light Diner Frankfurt, KY – Good food and you get to listen to owner Chef Rick solve the problems of the world. Seats around ten but it is the place to eat to interact with the locals.
This diner became popular after “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives” featured it.
Don’t let the looks of the place deceive you. It adds to the experience, and it is downtown Frankfort.
It is small, counter seats for like 7-8 and 3-4 tables that seat roughly four. There are a few seats outside.
Rick is a cool guy.
Broom Wagon
It’s a bike shop, café and a beer garden. Monday nights they have live Bluegrass music.
The coffee and cafe menu are both terrific. It’s a can’t-miss experience in Lexington.
Carson’s – Downtown Lexington
It’s a combination of retro, hip and gourmet. It is pricey, so what I recommend is going for happy hour menu at a fraction of the cost.
The food is fabulous. I loved the bourbon-infused sweet and spicy ribs.
It is pretty close to the Woodsongs show if you end up doing that on a Monday night.
Varanese – Louisville
Fantastic menu in this nice restaurant with Bourbon-infused dishes.
Walk around the Historic Clifton neighborhood before you eat. Quaint, little neighborhood.
Fava’s Restaurant – Georgetown, KY
It’s a family-owned restaurant with a nice menu for breakfast or lunch. I loved the Country Boy breakfast meal.
Good place to combine with the Toyota factory or Old Friends Retirement Farm.
Kentucky Cave Country
When you travel to Kentucky, you must check out world-famous cave country. Cave country is located in Kentucky’s South Central region. The South Central region of Kentucky is home to other famous attractions like the southern shorelines of Jamestown, Lake Cumberland, Dale Hollow Lake, Somerset, and Green River Lake. Visiting Cave Country, you need to pay a visit two Mammoth Cave. Located in Cave City, KY, Mammoth Cave is the second oldest tourist attraction in the entire United States. Mammoth Cave is a World Heritage Site and an International Biosphere Reserve. The cave offers over 4,000 miles of passages along with 400 miles of mapped passageways.

And throughout his too short life, he often looked back fondly on his Kentucky roots.
BUT, the sixteenth President, and one of the most iconic figures in the history of our nation lived in Kentucky for only a short time early in his childhood before his family moved to Illinois.
Note – The Log Cabin is a replica, and he was born there but did not live there past age 7.

**Fair warning, it’s a splurge alert** Speaking of Churchill, it is one of the best places to see the Northern Lights in Canada. It is, however, difficult to get there.
The best opportunity to see the Aurora Borealis are in the coldest months, January to March.
It is expensive getting there from Winnipeg. I felt staying in Winnipeg and getting the Churchill experience at the zoo was the value move to make.

By going to Winnipeg, you will find out Winnie the Pooh was a real bear!
Harry Colebourn, a lieutenant and veterinarian from Winnipeg, purchased a black bear cub in Ontario on his way to World War I.
He named him “Winnie” for his hometown city of Winnipeg.
There is a Winnie the Pooh Winnipeg museum, gallery, and statue in Assiniboine Park.
Christopher Robin Milne, son of Winnie the Pooh creator A.A. Milne, loved to visit Winnie in the London Zoo.
Winnie went with Colebourn to England and once Colebourn was sent to France for three years, he donated Winnie to the London Zoo.
Sits at the intersection of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers, which is considered the city’s center.
It is a marketplace where you can buy produce, desserts, coffee, hang out with locals, and eat at good restaurants.
I went to Beachcombers, and would have recommended it.
However, it closed a few months ago despite the excellent atmosphere and dishes.
I still think about the locally made apple maple whiskey and bacon-wrapped scallops I had sitting right by the fireplace. A dream.
– The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is an unbelievable experience.
It inspired, engaged and taught me so much about the world’s progress towards equality, solidifying our rights, and how to inspire change.
The building’s architecture is state-of-the-art.

This is arguably the most adventurous, unique, local and memorable culinary experience in Winnipeg.
It is a pop-up restaurant that is only open three weeks per year every February.
At least you now know how valuable an off-season experience is!

When I think about my time there, I felt my day spent with Kristen Treusch of SquarePeg Tours represented Winnipeg best.

The music landmarks of the city, some involving Neil Young and the “Guess Who.”
The Saint Boniface Museum – collection of artifacts and information about the Metis and Francophone communities of Manitoba and an exhibit on Louis Riel’s life.

“The Guess Who” – A rock band formed in Winnipeg in the 1970s. They sold more albums in one year than any band in the world, even more than the Beatles!
Neil Young is the most famous musician to come from Winnipeg.

Going to a Winnipeg Jets Game
Hockey is a religion in Winnipeg. There are several things to do do before your trip to Winnipeg. One of the first is to buy tickets to a Jets game. The Bell MTS Place is of my top NHL arenas and game experiences.

I visited in mid-January. It was neat to get in free. Same with having a conversation with the working rangers.
I got to dictate the time I spent in each building.
And I had the rooms to myself.
Getting to Philadelphia for Under $20 Round-Trip
It is easy and inexpensive traveling to Philadelphia from any Northeast city with Megabus, BoltBus or Greyhound.
On my trip, I arrived in a prime location, across the street from the Liberty Bell on Market and Sixth street. My stop was a two-minute stroll from Liberty Hall.

Congress Hall

I felt having the rangers’ individualized attention, and their quality information was better than a guided tour.
They have time to answer questions in the offseason.
Getting “unscripted” answers from passionate professionals from the National Park history fields is golden.
Another amazing thing; it was all free!
Upstairs at Congress Hall
I gave myself plenty of time to hit multiple buildings. I went to Congress Hall where the U.S. federal congress and senate used to meet.
Philly was the temporary U.S. capital from 1790 to 1800, and George Washington was president most of that time.
In 1796 he left with a thorough and sensitive farewell address in Congress Hall, where he expressed his wish for America to not enter foreign nations‘ conflicts. He added guiding principles for the country and said “national union” meant “collective and individual happiness” for our citizens.In addition, he said each U.S. citizen is an “American.” He stressed the importance of showing patriotism.Washington felt political parties were a threat to the nation‘s health.
Independence Hall National Park
Edmund Woolley built Independence Hall National Park between 1732 and 1756 after designing it with Andrew Hamilton.
It served as the State House of Pennsylvania.
Today, Independence Hall serves as an international symbol of government by the people.
The reasons… the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution.
Stroll Down Elfreth’s Alley
Before you leave Philly, take a stroll down Elfreth’s Alley. Elfreth’s Alley serves as the oldest continuously inhabited street in the entire nation. Located right in Old City, it is an essential stop on every history-lover’s travel itinerary. With picturesque flower boxes, brickwork, and shutters, this small street preserves three centuries of historic evolution. In fact, many homes are still occupied by local Philadelphians. Certainly, Elfreth’s Alley is a great stop on your historic Philly travel itinerary. Liberty Bell, Its Duties, and What It Symbolized
I spent time at the State House Bell, now the Liberty Bell, right across the street. I got to see the Bell’s famous crack up close!
Get your mind out of the gutter!
The expanded crack resulted from attempts to fix a thin crack. The smaller one destroyed the Bell’s tone after the American Revolution.
The repair work dates back to 1846.
A ranger told me the repair failed while the Bell rang for George Washington’s birthday anniversary.
But, the original crack reappeared and lengthened. She added the crack left an upwards zig-zag shape towards the Bell‘s top. Later, it was silenced forever.
The Bell weighs 2080 pounds and can make a noise if struck with a mallet.
The State House Bell called for Pennsylvania Assembly members to meetings and announced key events throughout the city. The Bell called citizens to protest Parliamentary oppression. Because of the Civil War, the Liberty Bell symbolized national reunification.
The icon was a bright spot while race riots, lynchings and Indian wars were happening. I found out marketers used the Bell’s image as an effective marketing tool to sell products, linking political liberty with economic prosperity.
A ranger pointed out:
– The Liberty Bell’s key strength is symbolizing freedom. It represents the long quest for liberty and the need to keep us free.
– The Bell embodies the American Revolution’s legacy, the ongoing struggle for freedom and liberty‘s nature.
Other Reasons to see Philadelphia During the Offseason
Hotel rates are at their lowest during December and January. Tourism is at its lowest from November to March.
The weather is cold, but you will mostly stay indoors.
It’s better to enjoy all you’re seeing in Philadelphia without many tourists.

Buffalo has a terrific bus system because buses along each of the routes make frequent stops.
The stops are located close enough together that transfers are a breeze.
Navigating the transit from Elmwood Village in Buffalo to Niagara Falls was simple.
I hopped on the 26 NFTA bus and transferred to the 40 which took me right to my destination. The day pass was only $5, a bargain allowing me to hop on and off any bus.
I saved a great deal of money choosing public transportation over the much more expensive options of Uber, taxi or car rental.
This is a great example of employing value travel strategies to maximize your experience while minimizing the cost.
I also stayed at an airBNB a few blocks away from Elmwood Village for just under $40 per night.
As soon as I stepped foot in Elmwood Village, I felt right at home.
Off-Season Travel to Niagara Falls
Andrea Czopp, the Vice President of Operations for Destination Niagara USA, the biggest MYTH about visiting Niagara Falls outside of the busy summer tourist season is that there is a lack of things to do in the off-season.
“While it is true that the Maid of the Mist closes for the season in late October and doesn’t return until Spring, the Cave of the Winds attraction remains open year-round with an abbreviated tour and discounted ticket price,” Czopp says.
“… There are also several other viewing areas at the Niagara Falls State Park that remain open even in the coldest months of the year that offer spectacular views,” Czopp adds.

ADVANTAGES OF VISITING IN COLDER MONTHS
In my conversation with Czopp, she confirmed that in the offseason there are numerous benefits to visit the park:
—The crowds are smaller allowing for more space to move around and view the falls
—For those who drive, parking rates cost less.
—Hotel rates are more affordable.
Locals should be on the lookout for winter “staycation” hotel packages at Niagara Falls.
During the winter months, the park takes on a whole different appearance.
“Freezing temperatures transform the mist into magical sculptures of snow and ice that cover every inch of the park including the trees and grass and even the guardrails and classic viewfinders,” Czopp says.
Visitors should wear:
layers,
hand and toe warmers,
thick socks and boots,
a hat that covers the ears,
gloves and a warm jacket.
By dressing for the weather, you can enjoy the wondrous beauty of Niagara Falls in any season. Of course, this is key to avoid common travel mishaps on your Niagara Falls getaway.

Of course, visiting Niagara Falls in the off-season allows you to take advantage of picture perfect shots. Once the temperature drops, fewer tourists are out and about everyday. Naturally, this makes it easier to capture shots worthy for social media. Be sure to capture some great images at the falls, Maid of the Mist, and Cave of the Winds. BRAVING THE WEATHER AND ENJOYING THE OFF-SEASON CONDITIONS
JEREMY FRIED’S AND KELLY STOVALL’S LATE OCTOBER VISIT
Jeremy Fried and Kelly Stovall planned their trip to Niagara Falls from Louisville, Kentucky in late October.
They felt the fog, cold weather, and snow flurries enhanced the atmosphere and visual experience of their stay in Niagara Falls.
“… the mist, the fog everywhere, the dark skies with all the color, the trees popping against the backdrop and everything,… for us, it’s an ideal time to come out and see all this stuff,” Fried and Stovall said.
They encourage others to do as they did, brave the weather and go in the off-season.
“Just experience the experience, go when you want to go, and I think off-season type tourism is especially great for the community you’re touring,” Stovall said.
Fried agreed and felt that less of a crowd had a positive impact on his personal experience.
“We get to make our way around more freely… have walked the trail all the way all day unimpeded get to take our time and just soak everything in. We were able to find everything. It’s been great, even in this chilly weather,” Fried said.
SASHA MACAREAG BRINGS THE CHILD’S PERSPECTIVE TO LIGHT
During my weekend visit, I spoke with an adorable little girl named Sasha Macareag.
Her experience elated her.
She was visiting with her brother and parents. They felt it was an excellent time of the year to be there.
“I love the weather,” Macareag said.
“Waterfall… good! I ride the boat [Maid of the Mist].”
She, like many other children, were all smiles that day.
They were fortunate to be there just before the Maid of the Mist goes into hibernation until Spring.
THE FIRST THREE THINGS TO DO AND SEE
NIAGARA ADVENTURE THEATRE
I loved it.
The movie, The Niagara: Legends of Adventure, offers a breathtaking aerial view of the falls and surrounding scenery from many angles.
It also covers the geological history of the three falls forming:
— American Falls
— Bridal Veil Falls.
— Horseshoe Falls/Canada Falls
There were stories about adventure seekers who have survived and those who perished in the overpowering water over the steep cliffs.
If you wish to get a glimpse of what you will witness at Niagara Falls beforehand, it is well worth the admission.
Discounted tickets are available online.
I suggest you see the movie before you head for the Maid of the Mist or other Niagara Falls attractions.
MAID OF THE MIST
Off-season travelers must plan to visit Niagara Falls before early November to catch a ride on the Maid of the Mist into the basin of the Horseshoe Falls.
A benefit to going in the off-season is the ample room to move around on the boat.
It is easier to witness the beauty of the waterfalls and the nature that surrounds from different positions.
My favorite souvenir from this attraction was the blue poncho included in the price of admission.
Wearing it kept me protected from getting drenched.
The boat ride was spectacular!
And I kept the poncho, a lasting reminder of my incredible day.
An adult ticket costs $19.25, and a children’s ticket, $11.20.
Children five years and younger ride free with an adult accompanying them.

CAVE OF THE WINDS
Open year round, this attraction includes:
— a movie about the gorge trip,
— the power plants of Niagara Falls,
— how Nikola Tesla connected the power of the Falls,
— and why the world changed once Niagara Falls came into existence.
Even in the off-season, you can take an elevator down to the Niagara Gorge to see the Bridal Veil and American Falls up close.
It is a multi-sensory experience:
— you see the falls,
— hear them,
— smell them,
— feel them (will get wet)
— and taste the mist (if you stick out your tongue)!
You can take an abbreviated tour which lets you experience the falls from observation platforms and you can visit the World Changed Here Pavilion.
A Hurricane Deck positions you 20 feet from the Bridal Veil Falls and enables you to feel the raw power of the falls.
The deck is closed, though, during the offseason because of the danger of ice and slipping hazards.
The Cave of the Winds attraction is worth the money if you are not in a rush to leave the gorge.
Stay down there until an employee kicks you out.
Enjoy the breeze, take pictures, and soak it all in!
An adult ticket costs $12, youth, $9.
But when the deck reopens in Spring 2019, the price jumps a few more dollars.
LOCAL EATS AND TIME AT THE PARK AFTER THE DINNER
I advocate choosing local restaurants over large chain establishments.
Your experience will be more authentic, the food superior, and you will support the local business community.
Below are two I visited and recommend.
Powercity Eatery – Delish!
Located just a five-minute walk from the state park, Powercity offers many vegetarian and vegan health food options paired with excellent coffee.
My pastrami sandwich = unbelievable.
It came with egg and Canadian Bacon inside their homemade sourdough bread.
I ordered an almond milk cappuccino with a homemade lemon cinnamon ginger flavor.
Jahlil and the rest of the staff were so friendly. They ensured there would be no dairy or cross contamination to accommodate my food allergy.
The breads are all dairy-free!
Red Coach Inn – Scrumptious!
Red Coach Inn is also a fantastic choice. About three blocks away from the state park, you can get a decent view of the Niagara rapids.
But the real reason to go there is for the food. It is delicious!
I ate dinner there. Prices are affordable.
Want to eat out more? Skip drinks, an appetizer, or both.
You can return after dinner for free, and this stop enables you to take a break from the crowds inside the park.
The wine bar is a nice gathering spot, and the fireplace provides the comfort you may need after lots of walking in the Niagara Falls State Park.
I ordered the vegetarian stuffed Portobello mushroom with:
— tomato,
— spinach,
— artichokes,
— non-dairy risotto
— and oils. Ugh… so good.
The waitress Ashley and waiter Joe were accommodating towards me and my dietary needs.
If you will ever eat bread in a restaurant, indulge in those calories here.
ILLUMINATIONS
The Niagara Falls Light Show was not as amazing as advertised.
But if you stay at the park into the dark hours of the evening, the lighting could mesmerize you.
The glow of the mist and falls in the variety of colors are brilliant.
My preference is viewing the falls during the day with its natural yet striking aqua and white colors.
Staying late and seeing them illuminated in the dark is a good decision.
NIAGARA FALLS IN THE OFF-SEASON IS AWESOME
My Itinerary
I left Buffalo, took the 40 bus to Niagara Falls for $5 roundtrip.
Had brunch at the Powercity Eatery.
Stayed in the park until dinner.
Once inside the park, I visited the Niagara Adventure Theatre for the 40 minute movie
Took the Maid of the Mist Boat Ride,
Spent time at the Pavillion and Gorge Trip in the Cave of The Winds,
Took in the breathtaking views of the Falls from Prospect Point, Terrapin Point and the Observation Tower,
Visited the statue of Nikola Tesla, the inventor of the remote control and fluorescent lighting.
I left to enjoy a delicious meal at the Red Coach Inn and got back to the park in time for Illuminations.
I exited the park around 8:30 PM and caught a late bus back to Buffalo.
My day was so incredible that I returned for half a day before leaving to head back home.
The peace and serenity of the waterfalls was uplifting and awe inspiring.
It was worth $5.00 for the bus fare to soak in the scenery one last time.
THE VERDICT
If there is rain, fog or snow, it still cannot spoil the natural wonder that is Niagara Falls. It is unreal!
